About this mod

Isn't it strange that the most essential character of the entire Fallout: New Vegas game, well, isn't essential?

This mod makes the Courier essential. Upon receiving a blow that would normally kill you, you will instead fall to the ground unconscious.

It lets you find and manage installed apps quickly by name - useful if you have a lot of apps installed. It's completely free.

Isn't it strange that the most essential character of the entire Fallout: New Vegas game, well, isn't essential?

This mod makes the Courier essential. Upon receiving a blow that would normally kill you, you will instead fall to the ground unconscious.

The Vault-Tec Defibrillator can be set to revive you automatically with a configurable duration (default 10 seconds) or manually with a hotkey.
Your player cannot die - only fall unconscious. Thanks to the latest in Vault-Tec medical technology you will no longer need to reload a save should you encounter a mishap.

The default manual activation key is the backslash: the \ key. This can be changed to any key of your liking in the menu.

Want to test it out? 'coc TheFortSummit' in the console will place you in Caesar's Tent, full of hard-hitting Praetorian Guards.

Requirements:
New Vegas Script Extender

Things to note:
  • You can safely disable the Vault-Tec Defibrillator from the defibrillator menu. When you do this, you are set to non-essential and all scripts are immediately stopped, leaving no loose ends. The Defibrillator and all scripts are completely inactive when disabled. Opening the menu will reactivate the Defibrillator.
  • Works best with 3rd person mode - you actually see yourself collapsing on the fatal blow! Still compatible with 1st person mode - you'll be switched to 3rd person, just like upon death. You'll already be on the ground.
  • You need to 'calibrate' the defibrillator whenever your maximum AP value changes (e.g. taking AP-increasing perks or increasing Agility). You can do this from the defibrillator menu in your Aid section. Select "Update Health Condition".
  • If you jump down a bottomless pit you'll still have to reload your last save. Or fly out.
  • If you die in VATS you have to manually activate the defibrillator.

Compatibility:
  • Incompatible with mods that stop AP regen.

  • For automatic operation I rely on observing your AP value to tell whether your player is unconscious. (AP Regen is frozen once you fall unconscious.) Mods that continue to drain your AP after your death / unconsciousness, or freeze your AP during normal gameplay will break this functionality. Use the Manual mode with hotkey-activation instead of Automatic mode.

  • Again, for automatic operation this mod ebbs out a tiny, tiny minute part of your AP (0.01 of an AP point to be exact) when your AP is at its max value to ensure that the defibrillator can tell when your AP has stopped regenerating due to unconsciousness.

  • Completely new scripts and items - no overwriting of anything vanilla. Should have no conflicts other than for unconsciousness detection (AP-related). If you are experiencing problems, try disabling mods that affect AP regeneration or usage. Load order does not matter - put this mod as high or as low as you want.

  • Project Nevada's Sprint works with this mod at its default sprint settings for AP consumption. If you set Sprint to NOT consume AP, you will break this mod because you will be stopping AP regen.

Limitations:
  • Suicide
If you jump off a cliff and this causes you to be reduced from exactly full to zero health, you may enter a death-cam, VATS-like kind of animation and be stuck in the animation.

Solution:
Open the console and enter 'EndVATScam' to exit the death-cam and continue as per normal. Don't jump off cliffs if possible. If you're really into suicide then disable the defib first so that you can actually die. The death-cam triggering upon falling from height appears to be hardcoded in the game - you're not expected to survive.
  • If you die while scoping you'll be stuck in scope until you're revived. You can hasten the revival by pressing the manual activation key.

Install:
Use your mod manager or place the single ESP in the Data folder.

Uninstall:
Uncheck and remove the ESP from your Data folder.
Before you do so, remember to enter the Vault-Tec Defibrillator menu and select Disabled as the operation mode to revert your player to non-essential status. Else the next time you receive a killing blow, without the defibrillator, you stay on the ground, indefinitely unconscious.
Alternatively, should you just want to temporarily revert to vanilla, non-essential status, just select Disable in the defibrillator menu. All scripts are immediately stopped and there are no loose ends - the Defibrillator will be completely inert.
