DYNAVISION² provides a dynamic depth-of-field and auto-focus effect similar to a camera.

In other words, when you're close to something and looking right at it, the subject stays in focus while the background blurs.

DYNAVISION OPTIONS

You may adjust DYNAVISION as you like from the DYNAVISION LENS PACKAGE Pip-Boy Item (in the APPAREL tab at the bottom).

All features can be DISABLED in the PIP-BOY MENU.

Currently available features are:

> DYNAVISION ACTIVATION

DYNAVISION can be set to ALWAYS ON, OFF in INTERIORS and OFF.

> DYNAVISION BLUR STRENGTH

Increases or decreases the overall DYNAVISION blur.

> DYNAVISION SHIFT SPEED

Adjust the speed at which DYNAVISION shifts focus.

> DYNAVISION SOFT FOCUS

DYNAVISION comes with options for SOFT FOCUS. In short, these add a slight, overall softening of the picture in order to better emulate lenses. I find that a LOW SOFT FOCUS can go a long way to enhancing the DYNAVISION effect.

> DYNAVISION DYNA-AIM

DYNAVISION provides an alternate LENS EFFECT when your player is AIMING (right mouse). This effect tightens the DEPTH OF FIELD giving the effect of highlighting the targeted area, similar to zooming-in on an actual zoom lens.

NEW IN v4A!

ADDS the new DYNA-AIM feature! As described above, it emulates the look of using a zoom-lens at distance. It has the benefit of bringing your target into sharper focus. If it is not a 'benefit' to you, it can be disabled in the PIP-BOY menu. But I dig it.

ADDS enhanced performance particularly when the effect is DISABLED INDOORS.

IMPROVED IN v3A!

Yes, we listen to you fine folks!

ADDS: IMPROVED RANGE FINDER for more precision!

ADDS: IMPROVED Transitions!

ADDS: PIP-BOY Menu with USER ADJUSTABLE Options!

Menu Option : ENABLE or DISABLE DYNAVISION in-game!

Menu Option : DISABLE DYNAVISION in INTERIOR areas while keeping it active OUTSIDE!

Menu Option : Three BLUR STRENGTH Settings!

Menu Option : Five SHIFT FOCUS Speeds

Menu Option : SOFT FOCUS without needing IMAGINATOR (I would not combine the soft focuses from both, but nothing bad should happen if you do)

A quick note about SOFT FOCUS :

The game's DOF does not truly have the ability to blur outside the boundaries of the 'models'. As such, sometimes edges can be a little sharp. I have found that if you add a bit of SOFT FOCUS, the edges look better and therefore the effect looks more natural.

SOFT FOCUS is now provided in DYNAVISION2 and will continue to be offered in IMAGINATOR for those folks that use either one or the other. SOFT FOCUS also has its place in emulating a film-look, so it does have a continued value in IMAGINATOR.

However, you may not want to combine SOFT FOCUS from both mods. I don't believe you'll have any catastrophic failures, but it's really not necessary. The settings are the same in both mods.

A quick note about the new DYNAVISION DEFAULTS :

DYNAVISION2 defaults to:

ENABLED Everywhere
HIGH Blur Strength
SLOW Speed
NO Soft Focus

I'm currently loving:

ENABLED Everywhere
MEDIUM Blur Strength
FAST Speed
LOW Soft Focus

Combined with my IMAGINATOR and CINEMATECH settings, then topped with FNV ENHANCED SHADERS LITE, I really have to say, my game is looking amazing!

What you're looking at would be considered the SUBJECT.

For the purposes of this mod, the SUBJECT is considered to be what's directly under your CROSSHAIR - or, what's dead-center on your screen.

Yes. Similar.

Tell you why, but I'm going to keep it to what some might call a major oversimplification.

The human eye doesn't use Depth-of-Field (DOF) unless you put your thumb VERY close to your eyes. And that's more a function of the subject (your thumb) being out of your focal range than the eye's ability to use cinematic DOF.

The human eye is designed to focus on a very, very small area, which is why you have to move your eyes and head to follow the ball during a tennis match.

DOF is typically created by a camera lens. It's a cinematic solution that is typically employed to emphasize the subject.

Without going into a 20 page discussion about lenses, apereture, focal-length and the like, it's easy enough to state that DYNAVISION² is a pleasant bastardization of a much beloved camera effect.

DOF doesn't necessarily change with camera-operator movement, but DYNAVISION² is 100% determined by distance from the subject and whether you're looking at it.

It's an inaccurate analogy for purists, but for us, it'll have to do - and it's really cool.

If you want more detailed information about DEPTH-OF-FIELD, hit WIKIPEDIA

Well, it simulates AUTO-FOCUS and DOF based on your relative position to your subject and whether or not you're looking directly at your subject.

For instance, when you crouch beside a car and look at the car, the landscape behind that car will go out-of-focus. However, when you look at the landscape while still crouched behind the car, the landscape will come into focus and the car (depending on where you're looking) will go out of focus.

To be 100% honest with you, I can try to describe it for days but you'll get the idea faster by trying it out - or looking at the screenshots.

It's been called DYNAMIC DEPTH-OF-FIELD and that's about as good a description as any.

DYNAMIC DEPTH OF FIELD

Dynamic Depth-Of-Field differs from what you think of as the 'usual' in-game depth-of-field in that the effect is based on your distance to your subject.

Most other DOF mods are just blurring the deep-background. It can be loosely considered to be a fixed-focal-length and it's okay, but it's not for me.

I UNDERSTAND THE WORD DYNAMIC, BUT WHY USE IT HERE?

dynamic:

- Relating to energy or to objects in motion. Compare static.

- Characterized by continuous change or activity.

As much as I love Fallout, you have to admit the graphics engine is a little old and I think we can all agree that the developers made FNV to suit consoles and middle-range computers. Personally, I think that's fair enough, because they also gave us the mighty GECK which allows guys like me to take my righteous indignation and apply that energy in practical ways.

Tapioks brought the amazing ENB shaders over to FNV pretty early on in the life of the game and I have to admit, I got kind of addicted to it. It is called FNV ENHANCED SHADERS.

I was especially thrilled with the DYNAMIC DEPTH OF FIELD effect that it had - and even despite some issues I found it indespensible. If it wasn't for that damn mod, I'd probably have finished the game and moved on by now... damn you!

The problem was that the ENB's DyDOF is a performance hog.

Over time, I got a little bit better with this GECK stuff and met a very talented programmer/modder who goes by the name of Gopher. He and I put together a mod called CINEMATECH and also collaborated on this.

DYNAVISION² is a complete ground-up overhaul with entirely new code and optics.

What's especially nice about it is that it's done with the game engine and therefore demands far less of your graphics card than ENB does. Using it in conjunction with the NVSTUTTER REMOVER I see nearly no performance loss.

As you approach your subject, the DOF effect seems natural. The closer you get to the subject, the more the background goes out of focus.

When you look into the middle distance, there is no DOF effect (as in 'real-camera-life') so walking down the highway isn't a disorienting blur.

When you stare off into the deep-background, the immediate foreground will go slightly out of focus.

All as if you were playing the game through a decent 35MM lens - with a really good Assistant Cameraman (ha! film joke).

It would be a damn lie if I said this was a perfect replica of a 35MM camera auto-focus. It's not, but it's really good. Because the developers of FNV decided against including it in the core file, this will always be a fairly awesome workaround.

However, that said, when playing the game and not just staring at the effects to see how it goes, I think you'll find it a great addition.

DYNAVISION2 uses GOPHER'S RANGE FINDER as its core technology with the permission and collaboration of the author!

It's easy! Install and activate the mod as you would any other.

Viola!

Place it according to the LOAD-ORDER Readme included in the archive.

Note: You MUST be using the LATEST VERSION OF NVSE for this to work.

DYNAVISION works perfectly with IMAGINATOR and CINEMATECH!

For the best visual result when using DYNAVISION², I recommend using the IMAGINATOR : FOCUSOR.

Selecting FOCUSOR SOFT FOCUS LOW or MED will give the DYNAVISION effect a more cinematic quality and complete the 'smooth' look!

In CINEMATECH I personally enjoy a nice low grain setting to complete the "film" look.

IMAGINATOR and CINEMATECH will work wonderfully with DYNAVISION², so I recommend you play around till your heart's content.

I'm going to go on a limb and say that DYNAVISION² is compatible with nearly everything!

Not to tell you what to do, but you REALLY SHOULD combine it with IMAGINATOR, CINEMATECH and ENHANCED SHADERS LITE!

The best visual results can be gained from adding:
IMAGINATOR : FOCUSOR : SOFT FOCUS
CINEMATECH : MEDIUM SETTINGS of your choice (I like STATIC/WHITE @ 25 and GRIT/BLACK @ 25)
FNV ENHANCED SHADERS LITE : with the palette of your choice.

Looks AMAZING!

Also extremely awesome with NEVADA SKIES - URWLified.

It MAY work with other DOF mods, but you MAY VERY LIKELY get unexpected visual results and you'll probably grind your system to a blurry halt. If you're going to use other DOF mods, put DYNAVISION² after them in the load-order but don't be surprised if you have to make a choice. In most cases, DYNAVISION² will work with IMAGINATOR'S HORIZONCLEAN feature. Your results may vary.

It is my personal belief that using DYNAVISION² in conjunction with FNV ENHANCED SHADERS LITE is essential.

It also wouldn't bother me at all if you tried out my other mods:

ELECTRO-CITY : RELIGHTING THE WASTELAND

LUMENARIUM - Sunglasses that Work and Reasons to Wear 'Em

ELECTRO-CITY : IMAGINATOR

And, a little something else I worked on with GOPHER:

CINEMATECH - Film Grains and Styles
