Posting reputation: let the community moderate itself

  • Comment
I have added a new reputation system to file and image comments on all the Nexus sites. This new system is a "plus or minus" system similar to the current rating system except that minus points can actually have consequences to the post. It is visible on all file and image comments to the right of the comment date.

If you like a post you plus rep it by clicking the thumbs up
icon and the post will instantly gain a reputation point. If you don't like the post, if you think it's a troll post or didn't add to the discussion then you can neg (negative) rep the post using the thumbs down
icon and it will instantly gain a negative reputation point.

If a post has -5 or less reputation then it will automatically be hidden from view and the only way for the post to be seen is for the user to specifically click to see the post. You can only give reputation to a post once (and you can't change your decision) and to avoid people going crazy and just repping everything and anything you can only give rep to 5 posts per 24 hours if you're a normal member and 10 posts per 24 hours if you're a supporter of the site.

Please note that this system should not replace the use of the "Report this comment" feature and if you think someone is trolling or breaking the rules then please report the post for the staff to take a look at it; the person might need to be hit with the ban stick. So hey, neg rep the post so others can't see the needless post and then report it just to make sure the staff see it and take some action.

This system is my first attempt at using AJAX, PHP and MySQL together for a seemless experience (no pop-up windows) so fingers crossed it's all working!

not a big deal but i put up a nice comment just saying welcome back to liana got a thumbs up then a thumbs down so im back to 0 personally its not a big deal and its a nice idea to moderate post may feel this is people will abuse it or not use it for its proper use

i like the idea of this and if you could find a way were it will not get abused it could be real good

    i lke krimzin idea

"You could do as youtube does with + comments,"

there are several reasons for this for example if people are having difficulty installing a mod such as elsweryr mod if the community put thumbs up to the solution posted by the modder or a member of the community. it save the time of the author to keep posting a solution and bumps the post to the top so everyone can see also it means the author no longer becomes a full time help desk as most questions tend to be the same and some people tend not to use the readme and instanly go on the comments thread to seek direct answers

this is just a example and a idea i hope it makes sense

You could do as youtube does with + comments, where if it gets a certain number of thumb ups the comment is bumped to the top of the thread, and the comment with the most thumbs up is at the top followed by the second highest positive thumb number and descending from there. If that would even work with what tools you're using. but i digest...

Just a minor note, but whenever I plus rep something, the number of reps appears above the post, but before the previous post...interesting.

You explained the significance of the negative minus reputation but what is the significance of the + points?

From what I can see, not a big pile.

Seems very similar to "Tom's Hardware" comment section. Good idea. Let's see. Kudos.

If a post has -5 or less reputation then it will automatically be hidden from view

-Does this mean a total of 5 thumbs down? Or that there are 5 more thumbs down than thumbs up?

ie. A post with [+10,-5] would be shown, correct?

I am wondering solely because it seems to me, that hiding based on comparative numbers (more negative than positive reps) would be more effective than absolute value (X number of negative reps). From the way I read your post I think this is how you have implemented it, but I would like to be clear.

    Thank you.

    -5 rep, +1 rep = total -4 rep = post still visible

    -6 rep, + 1 rep = total -5 rep = post hidden

cool feature. the only suggestion I would have is to rename it to "comment status' or 'post feedback' or similar.

the reason is that the term "reputation" next to a posters name automaticly lead me to think that the reputation score represented each members reputation score across the entire site.

Many forums have a global reputation system, so its easy to think that the nexus feature is a global rep system rather than a + or minus of a specific post.
