Morrowind

Vote for Bethesda at The Escapist

  • Comment
Each year The Escapist (best known for their weekly "Zero Punctuation" column) run a people's choice competition of the biggest game developers in the world. Members of the site vote for their favourite developers in "rounds" against other developers and in the latest round Bethesda have come up against Valve, creators of all those games you love to hate (and I guess enjoy).

If you'd like to help Bethesda out in a match-up they're clearly underdogs for then head on over to the voting page and give Bethesda your support. They're going to need it against those raving (noob) TF2 fans.

Nobody should trust my taste in video games, though. I still play Rebel Moon Rising and think it's fun.
In the games I've played from both companies..
Half Life (Couldn't complete without cheats.. Stupid HECU..) < Fallout 3 (I can't mod for it) < Portal (Wickedly funny, amazing physics) Morrowind (Too many quests to count, but not enough spoken dialogue, combat is boring) < Half Life 2 + Expansions (Amazing engine, storyline, plot, graphics, levels long and boring + sudden physics puzzles) < Oblivion (So fun and creative! Plus TESCS)

I didn't like Fallout 3 that much.. The plot struck me as one massive FedEx quest, plus when modding for it it's difficult to get creative like in Oblivion (Fallout 3 needs magic!).
So Valve and Bethesda score about the same in my opinion.

Ok... I can agree on TF2, but Half Life 2 is amazing.
The end of Half Life 2 makes it one of my absolute favorites, and in HL2: episode 2, the AI behind Alyx was very convincing.
(IMO she's one of THE best NPC characters EVER, because of how helpful she is, and how many things she can say.)

But even if not for all that, what about GMOD?
I love being able to do things like tying Luigi to a rocket, or putting guns on a flying washing machine that follows it's owner and shoots anything else that moves.

That being said though, I'd still vote for Bethesda, because of Morrowind. Oblivion and FO3 are amazing, but not quite like Morrowind was. Of course Oblivion does has everything Morrowind lacked, like the full voice acting and the way swords hit each other, but it lost the myriad of strange and wonderful weapons and items that Morrowind had.
    *sigh*
I guess you can't have everything...

Just for your information the first 3D Shooter to be released was Quake in 1996 and is considered the foreruner of ALL modern shooters, look it up. Here is some food for thought, I don't sway either way because both have their strengths and weaknesses its arrogance that makes me speak out. Because the quake engine is considered the first. It is the first. Look closely at the picture below, what is stemmed off of quakeworld? GoldSrc and whats after that? Source. There, Information is power, learn before you speak or you have no ground upon which to stand.

I do enjoy Valve's games (especially Portal with its ver silly humour), but I spent a day on Portal and completed it. I spent a week on Left 4 Dead 2 before going back to Nazi Zombies, realising that it was outdated, and got the next COD. And worst of all, I spent an hour on TF2 before going back to COD (mainly because COD has the EASIEST MP of any game...).
I spent no time at all on these games, and, although I did get a lot of fun out of them, in Oblivion there was always a good new mod, or a place I hadn't discovered, I've spent over 200 hours playing Oblivion, but I'm always coming back for more due to the great vibrancy of tastes and modules out there on the internet.

For that reason, Bethesda got my vote.

I voted for Valve. While Bethesda made one of the best games I played in my entire life (Morrowind), they've also created Fallout 3, which I consider to be more of a blue screen of death crashing bug, then an actual game. Maybe Fallout 3 really is a good game, but I never had the chance to experience that. I simply hate crashes.

Valve on the opposite created the whole Half-Life series, which, just as Morrowind, is simply epic. Anyone saying something else is either a Bethesda Fanboy or has a bad taste of games. The difference to Bethesda is simple. Valve created HL, L4D, CS (which I never played) and Portal. Ontop of that you get another favourit game(mod) of mine, Garrys mod^^...in any case the most funniest game I've ever played...dunno how much hours spend in Garrys Mod Lmao. And finally, Valve created Steam, hated by most on initial release it's unthinkable for me to not have this game platform. I get the goty version of Oblivion for 20 bucks, ready patched and fixed plus tons of new special and cheap offers every week...what does a gamers heart wants more?

No original Half Life, means there will be NO modern shooters.
    No Call of Duty
    No Halo
    No Crysis
    No Farcry
    No Team Fortress
    No Half Life 2
    No Half Life 2's episodes
    No Portal

I don't know who gave you this information (probably the Wikipedia), but it's commonly superstitious to believe Half-Life has been the ancestor of all todays shooter games. HL has been released in 1998. The first real ego shooter driven by a 3D Engine was Turok (1997) and to the date where HL got released there already where tons of other ego shooters on the market.

Bethesda would have get my vote, if their games wouldn't be so unstable. They get a fat bonus however for the construction set, which in my opinion should be standard for any game today. It's like Valve and Bethesda are on the top of my favourits and then comes long time nothing.

No modern shooters without Half-life? Pfft, give me a break!

The gaming community's obsession with Half-Life 2 always puzzled me. I thought it was utterly boring and didn't even finish it. A couple of my house mates think/did the same. What made it worse was the awful loading times on systems of that generation; it became this linear shooter where you'd run in to an area, kill between 1 and 4 enemies, move a few paces forward and spend 20 seconds loading the next area. It got very tedious.

Single-player was not Half-Life 2's forte...but the Source engine was. Some brilliant mods/games have spawned from it; CSS, DoD, PVK, L4D, Fear, etc.. While 1.6 and 1.3 players argue that the Source Engine ruined CSS and DoD respectively; these tend to just be the people dismayed at having to pay for the Source variants, people with substandard systems or more likely; people who couldn't adapt to the Source Engine.

TLR: HL2 is dull, the Source Engine is great.
Well, that's your opinion. As the "boss" here, I respect that.

But Morrowind, Oblivion and Fallout 3 is weaker without the mods, while Valve's games still strong without them. Valve is more skilled, one reason is because they made a game in 98 that I still can enjoy.

Source Engine alone is great ? Wrong. Dark Messiah of Might and Magic for example is one of the few games with Source engine that is not created by Valve. By some, the game was good. By many, horrible.

But my main reason to vote Valve is simply because I can play their games. Morrowind in my weak laptop is pretty laggy (and low graphics), while Half Life 2 (also in low graphics) can still run smoothly in most parts.

    (don't ban me :tounge: )

Here we go, Valve vs Bethesda.

Well, just to put it bluntly, which company created the game this website is attributed to?

    There you go, simple.

Now, who's better, Valve or Bethesda?

Go Valve ! (Bethesda is good, but not enough)

    Without them :

No original Half Life, means there will be NO modern shooters.

    No Call of Duty

    No Halo

    No Crysis

    No Farcry

    No Team Fortress

    No Half Life 2

    No Half Life 2's episodes

    No Portal

    ------

And Half Life 2 is the 2nd highest ranked game in PC Gamer Top 100.

Guess the number 1 reason I love Valve. Their games ACTUALLY WORKS on my pc
