Your thoughts on improving this site

  • Comment
It's oh so cliché to say on the internet these days but this site is run "by gamers, for gamers", or maybe "by modders, for modders".

Recently I've been putting a lot of work in to improving various aspects of the site, ramping up the functionality, increasing usability and action efficiency and generally trying to roll out updates that are going to improve things around here based on recommendations from users within the community. Indeed I've found I have a lot more time for coding these days now that the infastructure behind the site is a lot more stable.

My imagination isn't the greatest, I'm not an experienced "outside the box" thinker and sometimes listening to the feedback of the people who make use of this site regularly is more important, and better, than my own ideas. This is my long winded call out to the community to come and tell me how you think this site can improve. What annoys you about the site? What would you improve about the site? Modders; think about what things you are doing regularly that you think could be better handled by the site. What are you constantly telling the people who comment on your files? Do you have any thoughts on how to make the site better, either in new functionality or in improving the functionality already available?

I'm not sat here doing updates for myself, I do them because I think people will use them and like them. I'm not a part of some corporate chain, bound by limitless bureaucracy and heirachies to get any changes done, so if you tell me what you want or waht you'd change then maybe I'll do it!

Some of the quickie ideas I've had recently have been:

  • A way of listing the other files that are required in order for your mod to work, along with a list of other files the mod won't be compatible with
  • Bringing back the "Author notes" field from TESSource, or having a list of options for mod authors to show quickly how they want their mods to be used, distribution permissions, etc. (feel free to chime in with more options)
  • Providing a more elaborate way of authors being able to choose how their contacted, if at all, and describing their role of support for the file they've just released (a way of indicating whether you'll be willing to answer PMs, only stick to replying to comments, or won't be providing support at all)
  • A changelog tab/pop-up so file descriptions aren't clogged up with 3 years worth of change logs
  • Another look at the tracking system to see if I can't make it more versatile and increase usability

So help me throw some ideas around. Comment on this news article and get the ball rolling.

A topic in the lounge had a picture of the most visited sites on the internet and their logos were displayed on a large map. The icon for these forums were fairly visible in the sea of icons, but it was brought up that it was the generic IP Board icon. Could these forums get their own icon to differentiate from the common forum icon? Here is a link to the picture: http://nmap.org/favicon/

The IP Board icon is in the lower right near twitter and gamespot.

    Greetings.

I spend many hours to collect the correct addons
then to check which is working and which is not
and then the textues for a prototype-base mod.
Still i am not sure that it is working well.

    My thought :
Prototype mods can be named as base by authors
while they upload it in public for use.
So with this as base, all the following
    add-ons to it,
    fixes for it,
    modification of it
could be in your site's area as a type of a thread
that contains all the relative files as reply's to main.
Or more parastatically as a directory tree structure.

When deleting the tracked files, we must delete one link at time (Click on the X, confirm the Delete? message, then return to the tracking center).
It' possible to improve this system?

I suggest to remove the X near the links, and replace it with a check box, then add a Delete selection button at the bottom of the page.
When we want to clean our tracking list, we select all the files we want to delete, then click on the Delete button.
So we can delete all the links we don't need anymore all in one time.

I wouldn't mind seeing more use out of the tag system, but if there's one thing that needs to be revamped it's the Updates Recently page and file tracking. I know you get alerts for file tracking if you're a premium member, but what I'd like to see for everyone is filtering what kind of updates you want to track, like if you only want file or description updates for a certain mod. As for Updates Recently, should have the same filtering as Updates Today, as it would help out with that section.

It is typical modding etiquette to include a readme file with the mod. If you encounter a file that does not, I recommend simply politely contacting the user and asking him or her to do so.

As for the suggestions about adult mods, here's my contribution to the discussion: the ability to tag search by both including and excluding certain tags. Say, searching Armor - Females while excluding Adult-Only Content.Implementing more tags could ensure the right content be filtered, perhaps between nudity and graphic content,* whereas graphic content's asterisk will include what it entails: extreme acts of sex, gore, torture, rape, etc. Perhaps make an entire tag pool for Adult (like how there's tag pools for Attributes, Components, Requirements, etc,) although I think Nudity and Graphic Content does a good job splitting them up.

One thing I'd like would be the ability to see who gives kudos to a particular user, or to yourself. For example, if Dark0ne himself were to give kudos to a member, then you can probably be pretty sure they contributed something pretty good! Or even just if you're curious to see who gives you kudos.

    • I agree with Pineapplerum (for the don't want to read all, sorry too) maybe we need several filters. We could base them on Tags (so we need to add some tags ie: extreme violence etc.). Maybe adult is a bit too global. We could divide a section like NSFW into nudity, sexuality, sexy, extreme violence...

    • It will be great to have a button that allows you to simply block any NSFW content disregarding your usual preference. I say that because sometimes I want to check what's on the Nexus using the privilege of my membership but still want to avoid NSFW material.

    • I was more wondering about finding users in the Nexus. When I try to contact someone that endorsed, post a pic etc. It's very laborious. I think that it'll be great if any mention of a user as a commenter or pic uploader, endorser etc. should link to his profile. Also for the pictures section, when you allow a pic, there's no way to go back to the previous page unlike files, comments etc. It could be great to be able to allow several pics in a row. Just my two cents.
    Keep the great work!

    1. -- Adding the files i.d. number to the end of the name in the file search page, at least in flat mode. I use the i.d. numbers to keep track of my downloaded files because more than half the uploaders don't give a proper name to the actual file itself. and when browsing I have to click on the file to open it's page to find the i.d number.

    2. -- Files that the author has requested be hidden or blocked should either be completely hidden or noted on the file search page. Lately there is about one file every three pages that the author has blocked from viewing, but you don't know this until you actually go to that files page.

Also, there should be a time limit on this type of behavior... Some of these have been uploaded several years ago and nothing has been done with them since.
If you organise the files as file size, accending, and then press go, the first 55 pages are 0kb files. Thats 549 dead files. sure a few might be placeholders, and a couple are tutorials, but a majority are just trash that need to be deleted.

I also think that it would be helpful if everyone put down some sort of readme that summerizes what the mod is and what is in it and who the credits go towards. 10% of the files i have downloaded have no explanation on them on how to install them or where to put them.

    Hi Dark One,
I didn't feel like reading through all of the comments so I'm sorry if I'm repeating anything that anyone else has already suggested.
As you suggested modders must list every other mod or software needed to install mod and I think it should be in red letters, large type and someplace you can easily read it before downloading the mod.
Mod installation instructions needs to be simplified for both the modders and the downloaders. A preset instruction code system where the modders can just give a number/letter code the down loaders could refer to when they click on a link that takes them to the page with the codes for instructions. It would simplify the description page for the modders -all they would have to put for the installation instructions is the link and the code and for the downloaders they could just click on the link, look up the code and even print out this page to keep it on hand to use it offline.
I think the search engine needs to be fixed somehow. All too often I've had to go to my search engine and put in what I'm looking for to find it on Tes Nexus through that route because using the search bar in Tes Nexus usually brings no matches or results. I find that a little peculiar. But finding mods on Tes Nexus through my browser search engine is a lot more helpful.
And as for the adult content...I don't mind nudity. I don't mind skimpy armor either. I don't mind a lot of things-I've even gotten use to the sexual content and now find it humorous. But the mods/images that depicts violence, rape, being chained up and beaten, etc... really do need to go in an area where people who don't want to use the adult material filter. That's not just adult content, it's disturbing. And I don't care if it is just a fantasy.
It's especially scary when it gets a bunch of thumbs ups and endorsements and I'm creeped out thinking about how many of these guys are rapists and women beaters?
It's offensive and very upsetting. Women being beaten and raped hits a little too close to home for those women/men who've been victimized.
Please, put that in it's own area.

The last thing is helping new modders learn. I had to sift through a lot of modders resources to find tutorials for beginners. Can you separate the seasoned mod help from the little beginners mod help? Please?

Other than that, I love this site. But if you could just do one of my requests, I'd really like it to be the one that separates the graphic violent mod/images against women (on a sexual level-you know which ones I mean.) in their own section. I really don't want to have to see that but I don't want to have to use the adult material filter.

    Thank you for listening.
