File server issues and consolidation

  • Comment
When it rains, it pours! I am aware of the current issues with the file servers for both TESNexus and FO3Nexus. This is a completely unrelated issue to the down-time and work that went on yesterday and revolves around a financial move by myself to consolidate the current servers.

Several ISPs are currently in a price war with their 100mbit unmetered services that has brought prices right down. As a result TESNexus and FO3Nexus are being taken down to 1 file server each, along with an addtional premium server, but with a higher throughput than originally available. The current issue lies with the ISP incorrectly locking the network connection at 10mbit rather than 100mbit (so there's some major congestion going on!) and is being looked into as we speak.

The London based servers are being taken offline; bandwidth in the UK costs about twice as much as the US at this time, and what with being in a recession and all it is important I consolidate the available resources and save pennies where-ever possible, even if it's at the expense of some user comforts. A site that works, but is slightly slower, is better than no site at all! This also includes the premium server, which will be taken offline some time next month and replaced by a server in Texas. The Texas premium server will be available within the next week, so for a month or so premium members will have two servers to choose from!

It's important to point out that these are preemptive measures in light of the economic climate and I'm not taking a negative approach to expanding and supporting these sites.

Hey you guys ever consider swapping over to 1and1 as a provider. They are cheaper and in alot of cases better than Namecheap. As well as you can get 3 months free and vouchers for adword, adcenter, and yahoo marketing.

Not to be advertising, of course. I would just like to see the site move a bit faster than it recently has been for everyone.

They even have domain transfers and if you call and speak with them, they can give you bigger plans than the ones they show on the site. And you can haggle with them. I've done it' before ^^

do you take donations to assist in covering the costs of operation? i know its hard on free-content providers when advertising drops, and i've seen first hand the damage from my parents' business(even though they're getting really old now). So i sympathize..the option for free access is a luxury that i am thankful the nexus provides.

To my knowledge financially the site is in good shape. Dark0ne is taking steps to reduce the costs of operations due to currency fluctuations in a volatile market place.

From an economic standpoint, you try to pay the least for the most, [more bang for the buck]. With the current exchange rate the server moves saves money and they are in fact faster servers with a higher bandwidth capabilities. As the current [high cost server] leases/contracts expire they will be replaced with the newer and less expensive options available.

Better service for all.......unless you are independently wealthy or have been living under a rock or in your parents basement. The global economy is is the toilet.....small signs of improvement are on the horizon but a turnaround is months away. Revenues from advertisement are down as a result.....these pay for most of the sites expenses, those who advertise won't pay as much when the economic outlook is poor and limit how much they do advertise and limit where......when the economy is strong they advertise everywhere, when it is weak they target market their ads for a better ratio of return.

Just look at the ads here on the nexus, almost all are for games and gaming.......a few months ago you were seeing ads from fortune 500 companies as well. These have since almost disappeared from the internet. Their target markets are better served on televiosion and radio and not on gaming sites.

if it is i really think you should make a post saying it...im sure that MANY people(including me!) will donate to this awesome site if they actually know that its facing finnancial issues.

For premium members only, select and use this server for best results:

London, England, Premium Members Only (6 users)

To be honest the London Premium Server is and always was one of the slowest for me (location is Tokyo, Japan).

In the past Texas was always very fast even with many users logged in; currently I use Seattle, it starts slow but picks up speed rather quick.

Anyway, the problems I sometimes faced a short while ago seem to be solved, all back to normal in the last couple of days and no errors anymore.

    Thanks a lot for that.

So where is this premium server for Texas? The Seattle is slow most of the time for US users for downloads as is the other server too.

It would be wonderful with a mirror in the Europe region.
Dont know what the demands on the server are.
But http://www.one.com/en/ is the best host in europe anyway. Really cheap and have fast servers. Check it out if youre looking for alternatives.

I have a couple of domains there myself some that i only use for minor things. I could think to lend it out for free if thats a possibilty. Its only 3000 mb in space though so the larger mod files would prolly do no good there. But maybe smaller ones? Dunno if it would ease down the stress or if its even possible to do?
    But traffic etc is unlimited.

You maybe also should stress the mod makers that do the larger mods (retexture mods etc.) to use the torrent technology as an alternative to your own file hosting.
Thepiratebay for example has a free tracker. Would take down the stress further and prolly increase the speed for the more popular mods.

Nice to hear it wasn't a weird mistake, just a smart decision.
I was unable to download some mods, but I have them now. Good Ol' Nexus works after a while.
