Morrowind

'Tamriel: Total War', a Rome: Total War Modification

  • Comment
A team of modders is making a modification for the game Rome: Total War, using the world of The Elder Scrolls.

Tamriel: Total War (TTW). The purpose of this mod is to bring the world from The Elder Scrolls game series into good, old RTW. Our aim is to create different, realistic and fun experience. We believe that balance, fun game play and realism can be matched together very well and we will do everything that we can to satisfy our fans.

We will focus on Tamriel (the continent actually known from the TES games: Arena, Daggerfall, Redguard, Morrowind and Oblivion). Tamriel consists of nine provinces: Black Marsh (Argonia), Cyrodiil (the Imperial Province), Elsweyr, Hammerfell, High Rock, Morrowind, Skyrim, Summurset Isles, Valenwood. Each province has it's own history and is inhabited by different races. Each race has it's own culture, religion etc.

Sounds like a great project. I don't know if the armors are own made or taken from Morrowind. If they were taken from Morrowind there could be problems with Bethesda, they could shut it down.

It wouldn't surprise me if they shut it down. I contacted the new community manager Gstaff about it (Since the Tamriel: Total War modders obviously don't care about copyright), and am awaiting a reply.

If it has to be shut down the sooner the better, so no more time is wasted on a project that cannot be released.

If it is allowed, it would be nice to see it confirmed by Bethesda.

when you think about it, there view kinda makes sense. Why would a game developer care if they were making a great mod for it, using some stuff? If people that don't have there game hear about a great mod thats out, it might encourage them to buy the game. It could even boost sales. And, as long as no ones selling it, they shouldn't lose any money.

I know there is some huge thing i am missing, but thats just my opinion

As a game developer, they're two ways to view a mod based off of one of your games. You can take the stance of EA, Blizzard, and Square-Enix in that mods set a dangerous precedent of violating your intelectual property (and thus void your copyright) and shut them down, or you may take the stance of developers such as Valve and view mods as free advertisement. It's up to Bethseda which side they take.

I'm sure there are some budding law students here who know this but I'm pretty sure if that if a copyright owner does not protect their IP then the copyright effectively becomes forfeit. That's the main reason why Bethesda would stop this mod, followed by secret plans to go into a Tamriel based RTS.

O.K. I've got a quote on the models by Belgarath:

Yep sometimes I'm using parts of textures from Oblivion or Morrowind, they are very good and helpful so it would be just lot lot more work for us to paint them from scratch. (IMO pointless when we have them ready).

Yes, I know lot of modders don't accept this way but I have my own rules here. Mainly what I mean is that I prefere nicier mod sooner finished with few rips from TES than worse mod finished much later without them.

The textures were ripped but the models are custom. Hopefully this doesn't lead to a confrontation with Bethseda.

Here's a quote from a member of T:TW, WImPyTjeH, on copyright:

No game developer team will ever (really never) give premission to base your mod on their precious game.

Screw copyrights - as long as we're not selling it, I guess it's ok

+ Bethesda doesn't have any power here

If you ask me, that's a dangerous stance to take.

P.S. Check up on the screenies page every now and then. I'm constantly finding new screens and uploading them there.

Cool, I'm on the front page. Pretty good for a newbie, eh?

I don't think they converted the models from Morrowind. I distinctly remember reading something posted by their modeller, Belgarath, that they were created.
