Four years after its creation, ME3Explorer, the premiere modding utility for Mass Effect 3, is now on Nexusmods!

ME3Explorer is the unofficial, fan-built "creation kit" for the Mass Effect trilogy. The "toolset", as it's often called, consists of over 40 individual tools bundled into the same program. Each tool has different functionalities that are restricted to a certain file type, game asset, or both. Most tools are made for ME3; a few have been ported for ME1 and ME2.


Many well-known mods have been created with the toolset, including: BackOff, CEM, Expanded Galaxy Mod, MEHEM, JAM, ThaneMOD, and many others. The authors of these mods used tools such as:

  • Conditionals Editor to edit plot conditions
  • Dialogue Editor to edit conversations
  • Level Editor to edit levels
  • Meshplorer to assist with mesh editing
  • Package Editor and ME3Creator to edit PCC files
  • Plot Editor to edit quest maps, codices, and state events
  • Sequence Editor to edit kismet sequences
  • Soundplorer to extract and replace game audio
  • Texplorer to extract and replace game textures
  • TLK Editor to convert between TLK/XML files

ME3Explorer isn't just for mod creators. There are also a variety of installation tools and utilities for mod users, such as:

  • AutoTOC, to update PCConsoleTOC.bin, ensuring proper ME3 functionality
  • ModMaker, to install various game assets contained in .mod files
  • TPF Tools, to install textures in a variety of formats
  • Image Engine to convert among various texture formats and compressions





Installation and Setup. Instructions on toolset setup and usage are found on the new ME3Explorer Wiki -- this includes the invaluable ME3Explorer Setup (Getting Started) Guide. All users are expected to use this information when setting up the toolset for the first time.

Articles geared toward mod installation tools and user resources are complete and should be referenced when using the relevant tools. Articles aimed at developer tools and related resources are slowly being added. All articles are easily accessed via the Table of Contents on the home page.

Help. If you encounter problems or questions during use, always consult the relevant tool article on the wiki. If this fails to address the issue, refer to Troubleshooting and any pertinent User or Developer Resource articles.

  • We do not provide technical support for specific mods. If you're having a problem with mod functionality post-installation, consult its author. If the author is no longer supporting the mod, you may be out of luck. This is the nature of modding. No mod is supported forever.
  • We're a single-player-centric modding community. Our forum and wiki content are confined to information from this perspective. While ME3Explorer can (and is) used to mod multi-player, we don't actively support discussions related to this type of content.

Bugs. All bug reports should be reported as GitHub Issues; reports made on the forum will be ignored. A significant amount of information is required before we're able to effectively troubleshoot any bug. Anyone can participate in development discussions, share thoughts, and field help requests on the forum. Advanced users can volunteer to be testers or contribute to wiki articles. Programmers can create new tools and/or maintain existing ones.

The toolset community found its roots in the Mass Effect 3 ending debacle. Almost four years later, Warrantyvoider, Amarok86, Kfreon, Saltisgood, and many others have worked together to create the 40+ tools that make up ME3Explorer today. Visit About Us for more details.





Standalone (non-Origin) copies of Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 are safe to mod without repercussion. BioWare's stance on modding Mass Effect 3 is dependent upon campaign type. No action will be taken against players who mod single-player content, but they do so at their own risk. Modding multi-player can be a bannable offense if the mod gives the player an unfair advantage. Players who choose to mod these files must do so with extreme caution.
