A LOT OF TEXTURES (ALOT)

DISCLAIMER : The textures included in this mod are for the most part not authored by me.
Many thanks to smarteck, CDAMJC, JeanLuc761, commositore, MaryseDynasty, Ellise, ELE08, AlvaroMe, DeadMeat_357, sulezraz and ThinkBlueN7, for letting me use their work here.
Thank you also to KFreon (ImageEngine, ME3Explorer), aquadran (MassEffectModder), AlvaroMe (Spreadsheet Master) and Mgamerz (ALOT Addon GUI).

Spoiler

What is this mod ?
ALOT is a one-step download to upgrade Mass Effect 3's graphics to today's standards. 2200-ish high resolution (2K, 4K) textures have been carefully chosen from the works of other mod authors or crafted by myself. We have strived to achieve the best look possible, while remaining very close to the vanilla (default) style.
Among many others, this project includes HR textures for : squad mates, environments, cerberus, geth, quarians, reapers, the galaxy map, NPCs, weapons, armors, et cætera. Multiplayer textures are also included in ALOT.

If you want the technical detail :
- We compiled hundreds of mods made by various mod authors into a single, exhaustive package. No need to scour the Internet for hours, we've done it for you :).
- We created a complete database of "portable" (ie identical) textures between the 3 Mass Effect games. This means comparing through various means about 44 000 textures.
- Bioware downscaled many textures and upscaled others throughout the development of the 3 games (eg a texture could be 1024px in ME1, 512px in ME2, 256px in ME3). We normalized these textures (same, highest resolution everywhere).
- We made plenty of new textures. More to come in the regular updates. Texture makers are welcome to participate !

INSTALLATION

0. First of all, read the FAQ for general advice and to avoid frequently seen issues.
Install content mods before ALOT (ie DLC mods, Interface mod, Controller mod, etc).
1. Download the main file and the update, if there is any.
2. Follow the overly detailed installation tutorial available here. Done.

3. (Optional but recommended) Install the Addon. Download the optional file, and follow the guide.
4. (Definitely optional) Install any other texture mods you want after ALOT (use MEM to install).
A tutorial on how to install mods based on TPF, MOD or DDS format with MEM is available here.

Additional Resources
- In case you need to install ALOT with MEM standard mode, AlvaroMe made a great tutorial, available here.
- MEM also has a wiki, where you'll find more information about what the tool can do.
- UniqueActive has made a tutorial video that covers the entire installation process, available here.
- He has also made a very exhaustive and informative guide covering a complete ME3 modding run, here.

Further Graphical Improvements

ALOT 2017 Addon.
Some mods can't be included in the main package because of permission issues. However, I made a batch file that will guide you in their installation. Think of it as a modpack. Both Nexus and Ottemis have confirmed they see no issue with this.

ME3 INI Settings.

Optimal INI settings are automatically applied by MEM. Full list available here.

NVIDIA / AMD Control Panel.
Open your control panel, modify the settings as you see fit. The truly essential settings to enable are Anti-Aliasing and Triple Buffering. Most of the other useful settings available are already modified by MEM, directly in the game's INI settings. Guide available here.

ENBs, SweetFX and other graphical enhancement tools.
I recommend using Lights Effect 2.5 (colourful preset by DjG545, reuploaded from here with the author's permission) or my modified version of smarteck's GemFX (more dramatic and atmospheric), both available in the Downloads tab. Install by first running the GemFX1.0.9.exe available here (direct download here), then by placing the GEMFX folder from my preset (in the Downloads tab) in the following directory : [Mass Effect 3]/Binaries/Win32/.
You can find more of these ENBs/FX here, there, over here and over there.
ReShade Preset available here. Be wary, some of these tools were reported to crash the game. It's undetermined what the cause of it is.

Optional Tarshana's Textures for Men
Alternative textures for face and scalp textures (only the diffuse maps). These textures take more artistic liberty than the ones in the main package of ALOT. There are no new textures in this package, only replacements. Here is a list of what Tarshana changed :
  • Under eyes have less wrinkles
  • No bald shave marks/zits
  • Softer lips
  • Removes a few excess freckles on one of the faces
  • A bit more shave stubble on three of the faces

FAQ

1. General Advice
  • Pirated copies of ME3 and its DLCs may or may not work, in any case, they won't be supported.
  • Don't install ME3 in the 'Program Files (x86)' folder (causes read-only and UAC issues). Instead, use either a separate partition (recommended), or another folder in your C: drive. If you did install ME3 in that directory, run MEM as administrator.
  • Turn off your antivirus when installing textures with MEM. Antiviruses can greatly slow down MEM.
  • Turn Origin's auto update setting off. Otherwise, Origin can overwrite modded game files with the originals without asking. If that happens, reinstall everything.

2. Is ALOT compatible with [insert popular mod here] ?
There are no known incompatibilities with any other mods. Just make sure to install them in the correct order.
Install all content mods (eg SP Controller Support, EGM, ISM, etc) before ALOT. Check the "Skip Vanilla Check" checkbox in MEM when you install ALOT.
Install all texture and meshes mods (ie TPF, DDS or MOD files) after ALOT, so they'll overwrite ALOT.
A tutorial on how to install texture mods based on TPF, MOD or DDS format with MEM is available here. For more generic information about mod formats, read this article.

3. How do I make a backup ?
To make a backup of your vanilla copy of ME3 (recommended !), copy the CookedPCConsole, DLC and Patches folders, as well as the PCConsoleTOC.bin and .txt, located in [Mass Effect 3 directory]\BioGame, and paste them somewhere else (outside of the game directory !). To restore to vanilla, overwrite the game with the backup. You can do the same to backup a modded game.

4. Texture skipped. Texture xxx is not present in your game setup
You are missing one or more DLCs. If you're not sure which DLCs you have, there is a list of them here.

5. Microsoft .NET Framework Unhandled Exception
If you get a crash saying "Access to the path ... was denied" when installing MEM files, try turning off your antivirus and trying again.
The Avira antivirus, in particular, was reported to break the normal
functioning of MEM. I have had no issues with ESET, personally.

6. Crashes, freezes
ALOT shouldn't cause any CTDs (Crash to Desktop). However, here are a few workarounds for crashes encountered by users.
  • If you pirated ME3, cracked EXEs can cause this type of problem with modded games.
  • Running the game in windowed mode and adding the command line argument "-nomoviestartup" to the exe was reported to fix some CTDs.
  • Disabling Motion Blur (in the GamerSettings.ini or Coalesced.bin) fixed crashes in some DLCs.
  • Replacing the Coalesced.bin (in [Mass Effect 3]\BIOGame\CookedPCConsole) with a backup you made before modding the game, was reported to fix some issues, like the game not starting.
  • Disabling ReShade / SweetFX / other fixed crashes for some people.
  • Flawless Widescreen was reported as a potential cause for crashes.

7.
Adding DLCs after the installation
If you install a DLC after having built the tree and installed ALOT, the textures of ALOT won't retroactively apply to that DLC. You have to vanilla your game completely, then redo the installation with your new DLC installed.

8. "DLC not authorized" error message on startup
Each time you launch the game, ME3 verifies that the content of the DLCs hasn't been modified. To fix this, use a DLC patch like this one (direct download : copy-paste-overwrite in your Binaries/Win32 folder). Make sure you install the requirements for the patch, ie Visual C++ 2015 runtimes !

9. MEM versus Texmod
Texmod loads all the textures directly in your RAM, whereas MEM replaces the textures directly in the main game. So, with Texmod, you get a veeery long initial loading screen (30mn+ depending on your HDD and amount of mods). You're also limited to 4 GB of mods. With MEM , you shouldn't experience loading screens longer than a few minutes, at most : the game only loads the textures needed for the level you are entering, not the whole game.

10. MEM versus ME3Explorer
MEM is a tool used to browse / modify textures and meshes. ME3Explorer is a toolkit for modders.
MEM is built for speed and fixes many issues ME3Explorer texture installation has (list of ME3Explorer known issues). Thus, it should be preferred to ME3Explorer for texture and meshes installation.

You saved my life

Wow! I have been wanting to play ME3 again for sometime now, but I didn't want to have to re download and install all of the texture mods on my new computer. I will definitely be playing again now! Thank you!

Wow... just, wow. It's like playing an entirely new game. [...] I play on a 4k monitor, and this has made the experience truly epic.

HUGE thanks to putting this pack together. Makes life a lot easier than trying to find all the little pieces.

Xayjyn
Excellent compilation mod; adds a huge amount of immersion to the game.

I recently upgraded to a 4K monitor and it left the standard textures looking....wanting...to say the least. I've now played through the Earth tutorial and the improvement is astounding.

Spark9
Thank you VERY MUCH for taking the time to put this together. I was searching for exactly something like this. Thank you very much :)

Just want to say thanks for putting this together. Recently built a new PC and this is my first time playing through ME3 with mods. What a difference. No hiccups with installation. FWIW - using Windows 10.
