About this mod

Give your enemies a one-way ticket to Pain Town with the reworked Railway Rifle! Tear their limbs off and pin them to the wall with the classic x3 Limb Damage, retrieve your spikes, and then make some more so you can unload them all into unlucky enemies with an overhauled rapid-firing Automatic Piston Receiver!

Railway Rifle Weapon Rework
One of the most iconic weapons from Fallout 3 returning in Fallout 4 came as a surprise to many and a pleasant one at that. However, like many of the weapons in Fallout 4, it suffered from a number of problems.

First off, fired Railway Spikes couldn't be grabbed even if you could actually see them but only looted from enemies shot with them, making taking shots risky as ammo
was rather rare and hard to come by. In addition, the Railway Rifle lacked the x3 Limb Damage effect from Fallout 3 and wasn't  affected by Heavy Gunner despite being such a large and hefty weapon. Lastly, the materials and perks required to craft its mods were ridiculous.

However, all that has been fixed and more.

The weapon is now affected by the Heavy Weapons perk and this gains all the benefits any other heavy weapon would, allowing non-rifleman players to wield it with increased proficiency. Ammunition has been changed as well, now being able to retrieve shots, hits and misses, alongside being craftable at Chemistry Stations for 1 Steel a piece. If that wasn't enough, the classic x4 Limb Damage effect has also been restored.

As for the mods, they have been edited to be as sensical as possible when it comes to effects on performance. All hidden VATS costs and aim-down-sights time increases have been removed, making the Railway Rifle much more friendly to use.

The bayonet, now renamed to the Breacher, no longer affects range but deals increased melee damage at the cost of 5 pounds. However, due to unknown technical issues, it can't be used in conjunction with no barrel attached.

There are now three barrel types: None, Makeshift, and Makeshift Extended. Having no barrel reduced the weight but increases felt recoil and decreased accuracy and range.  The Makeshift Barrel, aka Standard, offers no pros or cons. The Makeshift Barrel, however, greatly increases range and accuracy but at the cost of greater weight.

There are still just two types of receivers: Semi-automatic and Automatic Piston. Semi-automatic is standard and offers no drawbacks nor benefits whilst the Automatic Piston Receiver offers greater firing speeds and full-auto fire. Unfortunately, it comes with an inherent accuracy penalty I am unable to remove for the time being. Using the Automatic Piston Receiver does not, however, affect range or damage anymore.

Scopes have undergone the most changes, no longer affecting anything but weight and how far you see. The basic x4 Magnification Scope requires no perks to make while x6 and x10 require Gun Nut Rank 1 and Gun Nut Rank 2 respectively. Night-vision variants require Science! Rank 1 and Targeting, formerly Recon, Scopes require Rank 2 in addition to Gun Nut if applicable.

Finally, there are the stocks. There's just two still, Wooden and Recoil-compensating, but more may be added if suitable models can be found or made. Wooden Stock is the standard one, offering no changes to the base stats, while the Recoil-compensating Stock increases weight somewhat but decreases felt recoil and allows for more accurate consecutive shots.

On one final note, the weight for all the mods and the weapon itself have been adjusted to be more sensical, the Railway Rifle's base weight which is now 27.2 pounds. The reason for this drastic increase in weight is simple: the Railway Rifle is big and made of metal. It only make sense to have it weigh as much as it looks it should. This and the magazine reduction to five rounds is to offset the lack of any serious cons the weapon has in the first place aside from its rarity. The vanilla version doesn't offer any real drawbacks and with the x3 Limb Damage effect returning, keeping it at its base weight would simply make the weapon overpowered.

In addition to these changes, a unique variant of the weapon called Railmaster, which sports a decreased VATS cost, faster fire rate, and higher damage, can be acquired by completing the main quest Underground Undercover for the Railroad. It utilizes the same ammunition and mods, meaning ones made for the Railmaster can be taken off and used on a regular Railway Rifle and vice versa. Speaking of which, regular versions can still be found in their vanilla locations.

An optional download has been added which just makes Railway Spikes craftable and retrievable for those who just want that and nothing else.

Future Plans
Addressing the issue of the seemingly-inherent accuracy penalty for the Automatic Piston Receiver and the inability to use the Breacher with no barrel attached.

A patch for Automatron may also be made allowing you to convert Railway Rifles back and forth between robot and usable ones. In turn, you could arm more of your settlers and followers with Railway Rifles or save you some resources in making new ones for your 'bots.

Recommended Mods
These are the mods I used in the screenshots and/or ones I suggest to enhance your Railway Rifle. However, they are not included in the mod itself and must be downloaded separately.

Railway Rifle Retexture
- For those who want it not to look like it's been rusting since the day it was made.
Smaller Railway Rifle Barrel - For those who'd like the barrel to be less cumbersome.
