About this mod

Short How-to on how to chain together a little know feature of F4SE using an added F4SE.ini Configuration File.

Requirements
Permissions and credits
Very important, if you see the game trying to update STOP it! first rename your original Fallout4 exe back to Fallout4.exe or the steam updater will get confused causing you to have to reinstall Fallout. Bummer.

How to "Chain Load"
(ANY) Fallout 4 Launcher, F4SE, and Fallout4.exe

i.e. Make stock Fallout Launcher Load F4SE AND FO4

So... I was curious how I might be able to chain load... (Meaning: get all 3 programs to run each other in a row - "in a chain") ...F4SE while using the built in Fallout 4 Launcher so that it would always load F4SE AND Fallout 4...

This also works when using Steam to start the game or any 3rd party launcher

After reaching out to the developer, I learned that this feature (although undocumented - to my knowledge at the time of this write up) was, and has been included since the first release of the Program! So I figured that I would share this little GEM with all my friends here on the Nexus. You guys enjoy!

Step #1
Download & Install F4SE.ini

(B) Manual Install
-Download the "Chain Loader" file
-Place the "F4SE.ini" in your FO4 install directory --> ....\Fallout4\Data\F4SE\F4SE.ini

Step #2   **VERY  IMPORTANT**
-Manually Rename  Fallout4.exe  to  Fallout4_.exe

Step #3
MAKE ABSOLUTELY SURE YOU DID STEP 2 FIRST!

-Place modified F4SE loader (named Fallout4.exe it has no icon) in you Fallout 4 install folder - it's NAMED "FALLOUT4.EXE"

Step #4 (nVidia cards only)
Use nVidia Profile inspector to carefully add Fallout4_.exe to the Fallout 4 driver profile for optimal performance!... (there are very advance internal driver settings and SLI profiles. You will more then likely make things run worse if you change the values with out knowing what you are doing)
Latest Build - [url=http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/nvidia-inspector-download.html]Offical Release[/url.

Find the Fallout 4 profile, then click "Add application to current profile". Now select Fallout4_.exe and "click Apply changes"

That's It!
Now anything that tries to load Fallout4.exe will launch F4SE and now F4SE will
"auto-magically" load Fallout 4!!!

WTF! HOW AND WHY IS F4SE MODIFIED!?

HOW: Simple file version change from 0.0.2.0 to 1.6.9.0

WHY: To allow NMM file game patch version detection to work.

Remember when the game first came out and you didn't need a "*" (asterisks) in front of you mods to load them?

Well... NMM reads the file version of the game (1.5.0.0 or higher) you are running in order to know whether or not to apply this change. Default behavior is NOT to use the asterisks, thereby making NMM useless for Mod management without this mod.

The program I used to do this is called ChangeVersion and can be downloaded for free at http://changeversion.software.informer.com/download/ For those of you that prefer to do the mod yourselves.

The following is a FAQ and will be updated after patch day:

Notice: At the time of this guides creation...I have not expierence a patch (game update) since using this method... I am not entirely sure if anything negitive will happen - ie. failing a CRC check on a Fallout4.exe, as like -> what would happen when running an actual "patch" OR if the Updater simply contains a full new version of the Fallout4.exe and will simply overwrite F4SE and update as usual.

What if?

  • IF a patch is downloaded and fails to install, Just UNDO the renaming that you did in STEP #2 and STEP #3 and RE-RUN the update via Steam (Validate Files).

  • IF You Validate your files through Steam, This will, more then likely, Overwrite your Renamed F4SE (as it has the name Fallout4.exe and will fail the CRC check via Game files validation. Just keep a copy of this guide AND a current copy of F4SE laying around to redo the Chain Loading Process.

  • IF the game updates as normal and just overwrites your new Fallout4.exe, the worse case is that your newly and now incompatable version of F4SE will disappear. No harm no foul.
