Personal Note: This is one of my favorite guns and one of the first guns I optimized the textures for. I was used to the almost instant loading of the Deliverer which is very light on textures, even more so with optimized texture packs. I wanted the same for the Desert Eagle.
As it turned out, I didn't have to change the size of most textures. The claimed 1K texture size was only partially true, as half of the textures were actually 2k - those I reduced in size. I then used a different compression method that is much smaller in size, but loses some color variation.
The texture folder went from 82.6MB to 17.3MB - they are still 1K (max) textures as offered by the original mod though it does have upscale textures available as an optional download.
That covers 4 totally different color variations, so only about 7 MB are actually used to get a single gun in game. If you use multiple color guns for different purposes texture use will increase, plus don't forget texture use for followers, leveled lists etc, but that is all much lower due to the use of mipmaps.
There is a little loss of clarity on the playing card grip. This will be one of the first weapons that will be worked on during stage 2 of the SWOP project.
