Developed in a joint venture between the U.S. Military and West-Tek, the X277 "Viper" Rail Cannon was the effort to create a man-portable high-velocity energy weapon for field use.

Commonly referred to as a "railgun", the weapon uses energy cells to propel depleted uranium rounds across a series of magnets to eliminate any friction of the round moving down the weapon's barrel and thus allowing projectiles to be discharged at an extremely high velocity.

West-Tek poured millions into the project's development before finally finally returning to the Military, deeming the project far too costly for any form of mass production.

Only one prototype of the weapon was ever known to have been produced, costing just under $50 million per unit had the project been approved. The prototype was then displayed in the Museum of Technology in 2077 before disappearing for almost 200 years and finally being recovered by an advanced BoS patrol in the D.C. Ruins and taken to the Citadel where it awaits further testing.

This is my effort to re-imagine an older 'railgun' mod I created, whilst remaining as lore-friendly as possible.
