We've all been there: Super Mutant down the street, completely unaware of the mound of hot lead about to be fired towards it.  You draw your sniper rifle, draw the scope to your eye and try to line up the shot.

Really.  You try.

For some reason, the centre of the reticle jumps too far to the side when you try to correct it.  Too far left, too far right: this isn't how being a sniper should feel.

After failing to find any solutions online I had a nosey around in the FalloutPrefs.ini file, played with a few settings and found one that cleared this problem up entirely.

1) Find the FalloutPrefs.ini file on your computer and open it.  It should be in your /Documents/My Games/Fallout3 folder.

2) Search the file for a line that reads "fMouseSensitivity=0.0100", under the "Controls" section.

3) The default value for this setting is 0.0100.  To perform the tweak, change this value to 0.0030.

[Note that this does NOT affect the game's options menu's Mouse Sensitivity slider.]

4) Save the file, and you're done.

What this does is adjust the base sensitivity of the mouse pointer when in the game.  Reducing this value reduces the angle that the camera turns through for a given distance that you move the mouse.  As a result, the camera moves much more smoothly as you look around, with greatly reduced "stuttering", which naturally makes lining up a good headshot so much easier.

One obvious drawback is that this reduces the sensitivity of the mouse.  This can be corrected by either increasing the sensitivity of the mouse either by using the game's Mouse Sensitivity slider, or by increasing the DPI (dots per inch) settings of your mouse.  If neither of these solutions work, consider increasing the setting in the FalloutPrefs.ini file again.

In any case, I highly recommend you take some time while applying this fix loading and reloading the game while making adjustments to the sensitivity settings until you find one that works for you.  My own settings have "fMouseSensitivity=0.0030" and the in-game sensitivity slider full, and I would recommend starting at that and making adjustments yourself as suits you.

This tweak should also apply similarly to Fallout: New Vegas, though I haven't been able to test it myself.

Here's hoping this improves a few gamers' play experience.

May all your hits be crits,

A message I received from another member seems to indicate that the default setting may not be 0.0100 as described above.  As I only have my own copy of the game to test, I was unaware of this possibility.  In any case, if you are affected as described above, the fix will still work by reducing the default setting to about one third and making adjustments from there to your satisfaction.
