About this image

From The Adams AFB Archives:

WARNING - This recording is only for distribution to fully accredited Enclave citizens.  If you are at all unsure as to whether you should have access, please proceed no further and immediately contact an Enclave official.  All inquiries regarding possible distribution to non-Enclave personnel should be made to the Public Information Office, Enclave Security Division.

RECORDING START

Soldiers of the Enclave, guardians of the New America.  This is your President, John Henry Eden.  By now, you have all heard that a treacherous attack was made on us, on our own soil.  It is with heavy heart that I speak to you now, to tell you of all that has happened on this terrible day.

Approximately twelve hours ago, our open settlement at Huntsville, in the great state of Alabama, was struck by nuclear weapons.  The destruction and loss of life to this peaceful place was, as you have probably guessed, horrific.  LIkewise, great damage was done to the nearby facility at Redstone.  General Lesley Squires, the esteemed head of the Enclave military, was in Redstone Base at the time and, under his leadership, rescue and relief operations were immediately begun.

It is then that the full extent of this treacherous attack became clear.  Whoever committed this atrocity had obviously made careful preparations.  The troops sent to aid Huntsville's survivors were ambushed and wiped out, and the Redstone facility then came under attack from several groups of Wasteland scum.  General Squires and the remnants of his men fought most courageously, as one would expect, but they ultimtely fell to the much larger force before reinforcements could arrive.

So what are we going to do, you ask?

I have appointed Colonel Augustus Autumn as acting head of the Enclave military.  He is an officer of considerable ability, who has vowed to uphold all that General Squires stood for.

I have declared War Condition Yellow for all sectors and commands. I can assure you that whilst this condition does modify a number of laws and regulations, our ideals will be preserved.  As previously, Congress will continue to advise me on important matters.

We have, in the short time since, made remarkable progress in tracking down and dealing with the scum that attacked what was left of Huntsville and Redstone.  It is clear that most were dupes with little or no knowledge of their paymasters.  Investigations continue as I speak, and forces are already hunting down more of those responsible.

The nuclear attack came from a Chinese orbital weapons platform known as Shan Dian 4, believed to have been inert since The War.  Clearly, whoever reactivated it had a degree of technical ability.  Given that this device or others like it have not been used since, it is my sincere hope that our foe, whomever he might be, has no more weapons of this kind.

I say to all of you now.  We will mourn our lost.  We will rebuild.  And we will find those who did this terrible thing, and justice will be served upon them.  My promise to you, America.

RECORDING END

************

Yes, the Enclave is really REALLY upset by what just happened.  Go figure.

No mods this time either.  Other than MS Paint to tweak the image.

Given the degree of control that Eden & Co already had, this is not a 'Reichstag Fire' situation.  Technically, it's a 'Big Lie' - "We have absolutely no idea what happened or what to do about it, but we have to say SOMETHING to give people a target besides us ..." .

FYI, Shan Dian is Mandarin Chinese for "Lightning".  The number '4' commonly symbolizes death in China and other Asian cultures.

I can definitely see the Enclave going into panic mode over this, especially with the aftermath making it look like someone planned the whole thing. Now the question is, who do they end up blaming it on, and what happens next. Should be interesting to say the least. Looking forward to more!

Note that the aftermath attack is actually pure invention by the Enclave. Very easy to imagine any Raiders left in the area doing some oppurtunistic looting and hell-raising. But the "horde" employed by "sinister forces" that Eden refers to simply never existed. Claims of treachery, Big Conspiracies and heroic last stands against murderous untermensch hordes are always good combinations for getting the stormtroopers fired up. That's it.

Objectionable as the Enclave is, they are not totally stupid. They are very deliberately NOT pointing fingers at any major players at this stage. What if they guess wrong? Could finish up in a very nasty war with, say, the BoS and/or NCR, and then suddenly get surprise-attacked (AGAIN) by the REAL enemy. Not good at all. So Eden and Autumn are not bringing the thunder until (they think) they have figured this out.

The "Enclave In Full Paranoia Mode" will be a thing for quite a while, longer than the current MZ storyline (about 4-5 more pages for that). As I'm planning it, the Enclave will be almost invisible in the DC Wastes for a time, as they chase shadows elsewhere. But they'll be BA-ACK. You can probably make some guesses as to when.

      Twists and turns, matey.

I had figured that it was more opportunistic than planned raiding, and that they where probably exaggerating a fair bit to rile the troops up a tad, but that might very well backfire on them. Getting people all angry/ticked off at the "dastardly attackers" and then NOT giving them a target for their anger usually leads to disgruntled troops and can negatively impact morale, not too mention making leadership look incompetent. Maybe not in the upper ranks, but down at the grunt level, this could develop into a serious problem.

Anyway, really enjoying this, keep up the good work!

One answer there is that the troops DO have targets, sort of. Any and all Raiders and suspicious people (read: non-Enclave) detected within a Sunday walk of Redstone / Huntsville.

Whether or not these targets have anything useful / relevant to say, and the chance to say it, is probably beside the point.

Very interesting. Makes sense that Eden and Autumn would make up such cover story. Kinda wondering if this would somehow tie in with the alien blaster you find in the enclave mobile base crawler.
