Meanwhile I've found the original chess game in the game files. I like it much more than my own attempt (http://www.nexusmods.com/dragonage/images/47582/?), because it's so unspoilt.

Here comes again my background story for the chess game being a gift for Alistair from his father:

This chess set is nor very sumptuous nor very exquisite. It‘s just like Ferelden – natural and durable. Furthermore erstwhile this set belonged to king Vanedrin Theirin who taught his little grandson prince Maric to play at chess in person. During the Ferelden Rebellion it had been hidden in Ansburg in the Free Marches. So it‘s an authentic heirloom of the House of Theirin.
